Callum Wilson injury update and return date

Callum Wilson has been working out this week in preparation for the Chelsea game, according to Eddie Howe, although he has been working out apart from the rest of the team.

Howe anticipates Callum Wilson returning for the Premier League matchup against Chelsea on Saturday. The Newcastle United striker missed Thursday night’s Carabao Cup match against Crystal Palace on penalties because of illness.

The 30-year-old began the 4-1 victory over Southampton last Saturday, but he did not return for the second half due to illness. Howe believed it would be preferable to leave Wilson out because United was hosting Palace three days later.

With Chelsea’s visit to St. James’ Park the club’s final game before the five-and-a-half week Qatar World Cup break, Howe now turns his attention back to the league; Wilson is certain to make a comeback.

Howe said, “Callum, he should be alright. I didn’t want to risk it with his illness and weakened immune system. Wilson will know if he is going to the World Cup with Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier by the time he enters the field on Saturday. At 2 p.m. today, Gareth Southgate names his 26-man England team.
